Anniston City Schools - Swine Flu Update

The Superintendent of Education for Anniston City Schools, Mrs. Joan Frazier has met with area Superintendents and would like to provide the following information regarding the Swine Flu (H1N1 Virus).

The Anniston City School System is maintaining close communications with the Calhoun County Heath Department, which can be found at: http://web.userinstinct.com/1309863-health-department-of-calhoun-county.htm and with the State Department of Education in order to monitor the Swine Flu situation.  School system employees have also heightened their level of awareness concerning this issue and the school system is taking steps to upgrade our level of preparedness.

Mrs. Frazier encourages everyone to follow the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control, which can be found at: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/  regarding prevention.

Additional information regarding the Swine Flu can also be found at:

The following information may also be helpful:

  1. Flu symptoms usually include a tired feeling and fever. (usually high), headache, dry cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose and sore muscles.  Some people, especially children, may also have an upset stomach or diarrhea.  The cough may last two or more weeks.
  2. If your child exhibits these symptoms, please consult your doctor.  Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks lots of fluids.  Please be aware that you should never give aspirin or medications containing aspirin to children or teenages who may have the flu.

Extra steps are being taken at all schools to prevent the spread of germs.  You can assist by encouraging your child to wash his/her hands often, keep his/her hands away from their face, and cover coughs/sneezes.  Please do not send your child to school if he/she is sick, particularly if he/she is running a fever. During this time, all of us must exercise good common sense so that the protection of our children is maximized.
